The Rare Sense Odds Series uses simple Vegas-style probabilities to show how likely major left-leaning and right-leaning outlets are to deliver fair, accurate, and non-manipulative reporting, the kind citizens in a constitutional republic actually deserve.

You’ll find historical scorecards, current event predictions, and clear evidence that much of mainstream coverage (on both sides) is driven more by incentives than truth.

These are our real-time Vegas-style odds for how likely left and right media are to present major ongoing stories in a fair, unbiased manner versus partisan spin and manipulation. Click on any issue to see our full reasoning, what fair and unbiased coverage should look like, and how both sides are initially framing it. Ask yourself: Does their coverage align with the odds, or with reality? This is your chance to watch the information diet in action before the final scorecard is written.

Why the Asymmetry?

While both sides fail, left-leaning mainstream media shows consistently worse performance across our 54 entries. This isn’t surprising. The modern media ecosystem has a much larger left-leaning echo chamber, legacy outlets, cable news, tech platforms, Hollywood, entertainment, and academia all lean heavily one way. When everyone in the room thinks the same, bad ideas go unchallenged and outrageous claims become “settled truth.” If these were all right leaning the grades/odds/etc. would flip. 

 

Recent polls show the result:

  • 51% of Democrats still trust mainstream media.

  • 27% of Independents.

  • Only 8% of Republicans.

When one side trusts the messenger far more than the other, the information diet problem becomes self-reinforcing.

Look at the most outrageous claims listed for that issue. Check if the truth was called a conspiracy theory. At the end of the day, is the media being unbiased and fair? If not, why was your first response to defend them and get upset? This is one of the clearest signs you are being manipulated by your information diet.

  • Focus on structural context instead of partisan outrage

Quick manipulation test: If a story makes you feel strong emotions and frames everything as pure moral good vs. evil (instead of incentives and trade-offs), you are probably being manipulated.

We calculate the odds that left-leaning or right-leaning media will provide fair, unbiased, and non-manipulative reporting on each issue.

The pattern is clear: Left-leaning media rarely delivers fair, balanced coverage on high-contention issues.
